Professor Arthur has more than 30 years of training experience, 20 years of coaching, with black belts in both Judo and Jiu Jitsu. He started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the age of 13, training under Carlson Gracie, Sr., and Luiz Carlos “Manimal” Dias. Professor Arthur competed under Carlson Gracie Team, winning multiple championships before moving to San Diego, California. There he continued his training under Carlson Gracie black belt Rodrigo Medeiros, earned his black belt in 2003, and continued to win tournaments and expand Ruffhouse Jiu Jitsu across the U.S.
Our classes consist of warmups, conditioning, drills, technique, and live rolling/sparring. We pride ourselves on delivering tough, rigorous training, and continuing the regiment that Carlson Gracie envisioned.
Ruffhouse Jiu Jitsu is great for self defense, getting in shape, and most importantly challenging yourself. Only the strong survive, and if you aren’t tough enough, we will make you!
peewee jiu jitsu (4-6 yrs)
Peewee Jiu Jitsu students are often entering a classroom environment for the first time in their lives. We teach them structure, respect and discipline. We get them moving, sweating and working hard, while learning basic fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu and self defense. The students have fun with occasional games and spar without hurting each other.
youth jiu jitsu (7-12 yrs)
Youth Jiu Jitsu students are taught discipline, respect and honesty. They are pushed through strength and conditioning, and learn teamwork through drills and exercises. They are taught the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu, for competition and self defense. Kids learn to defend themselves against opponents of any size, and become leaders by assisting new students.
adult jiu jitsu
Adult/teen classes consist of rigorous warmups, drills, technique, and sparring. Jiu Jitsu teaches adults how to defend and submit opponents or attackers of any size or shape. Each body type has its advantages and disadvantages in fighting, and through Jiu Jitsu, students will learn how to use their body effectively. Jiu Jitsu teaches students discipline, respect, humility, and to overcome fear and adversity.

WHAT DO I WEAR TO CLASS?
For your first class, wear whatever you are comfortable working out in. Try not to wear anything with zippers. We have spare gi tops for you to borrow if needed.
i have an injury, should i still train?
That depends on what your doctor says. If it is ok with your doctor, then yes you can train. Make sure you inform us of your injury, and always inform your training partner as well. It is important to take it easy until your injury is healed.
my child is 6 but almost 7, or 12 but almost 13, which class should they be in?
We will start the student in the lower class. So Peewee class if they are 6 years old, or youth class if they are 12 or 13. Professor Arthur is the best to decide which class will be the best fit for each student.
can i go to any class?
Yes. You can go to any day your class is available. We keep it flexible for your schedule.
what is open mat?
Open mat is available to any adult student, and a few approved teen/youth advanced students. Most students will train / live roll jiu jitsu. Other students will use the heavy bags or other workout equipment. It is up to you.
how do students get promoted? what are the belts?
There is a full list on IBJJF.com. Professor Arthur promotes students when they are ready. Stripes are given in class, new belts are given at promotion ceremonies, 2-3 times per year.
